My great grand parents, Ella and Ora wheelbarger resided in Rich Hill during the late 1890's up to my great grand dad passing away I believe in the late 50 or 60's.
He worked in the coal fields, then after taking place in one of the Cherokee runs, near Enid, Ok. sold the land, returning to Rich Hill.
Opening a Undertaker business.
Owned a livery, several real estate apts along with I think a pool hall.
Three children, Herman, Myron and Theodore. Theodore passed in the 1917 flu epidemic.
Herman's picture, setting on the Fire engine, with the firedog, in the Town Coal Built book. My grand father, Myron, married Betty June Brown. Her daughter, Maxine, my mother, born March 31, 1917. Me, 1/16/37 in Springfield, Mo.
I spent several summers there during the 40's. With fond remembrance of the July 4th,fireworks set off at the railroad tracks, after the, war. Not so fond of the foul taste of the drinking water. My Father, Clarence Hickam, worked at the hotel and drugstore during his youth. Attending school in Rich Hill. Football team as I have a copy of the school picture. His parents, owned a sawmill, some where in the river bottoms.
Ella and Ora Wheelbarger, lived across the street from the skating rink.
The undertaker equipment, behind their house in a metal building. With cemetary stones outside, making a perfect place for me, playing cowboy and indians.I noted in the list of names, 1890 to 1990, theirs were missing.
My e-mail account is teddee5@aol.com
have their records from 1917, during the flu epidemic years.
